Te Whanga Stud
The history behind Te Whanga Angus goes back to P.J. Borthwick, who initially bought cattle from Hawke's Bay studs Waiterenui and Pharazyn Estate. Those first animals had at least a week’s journey by foot and rail from Hawkes Bay before reaching their new home at Te Whanga in the Wairarapa in 1936.
In 1972 Robin’s Overshiels angus stud was combined with the Te Whanga Stud. Te Whanga stud female pedigrees can be traced back over 50 years.
PJ believed the fundamental business would always be commercial bulls and his philosophy was to breed the best commercial bulls in New Zealand (temperament, soundness, growth and reproduction) 75 years later the philosophy still remains.

“The stud isn’t our only focus. It’s important, but it has to fit in on a commercial basis,” says manager Greg Crombie.
“The way we view it, the stud’s not a separate entity from the rest of the stock. It’s 10% of a total 17,500 stock units. Te Whanga stud cattle are designed to fit into the system yet be top producers at the same time, offering reliability and quality, proven Angus genetics.”
“The cattle objective is primarily to keep the quality of the grass for the sheep”.
“We want our bulls to go out to properties and last at least four years because that’s what they need to do here on our place. They need to produce female calves that get in calf at 15 months and continue to get in calf.”
Commercially at Te Whanga, all statistics are aimed at the 90th percentile, such as successful mating and calving percentage, with the stud sitting at 95% plus.
“To be selling quality bulls in another 70 years, we need to continue to incorporate those stud animals into the same environment as the commercial herd. We strive to select the right type of sire bulls to go across stud cows to keep us reaching our targets and to help other people reach theirs.”

Managing and Caring for your new bull
|
•
|
You have just invested in a Te Whanga Bull. To ensure you get the best return on your investment, we have a few suggestions on how to look after him. |
|
•
|
He has just left the farm where he was bred along with his mob he was bred into & familier surroundings. When he arrives put him with a small group of quiet cows or steers not steers that have received H.G.P or other bulls. |
|
•
|
When shifting or handling your bulls allow plenty of time to do the job, so they can be handled quietly and with patience. |
|
•
|
At mating time keep a regular watch over your bull & check him regularly. When he is finished put him back in a paddock with good feed as this will reduce the problem of fighting. |
